Foundation work
No new Polygon release this week. The work is happening behind the scenes.
Halloween configurators for polyreprint.com
I’m working on a series of configurators for polyreprint.com, with Halloween in mind. I’ve just released one: Joined Heads. It’s inspired by the film The Thing. If you’ve seen it, you probably have the same memories fused into your mind, of those bodies merging together. In this case, I thought this would be a good demo of the SDF modeling tools, where we create SDFs (signed distance functions) from any mesh, blend those together in a smooth boolean operation, and export the result for 3D printing.
There is a handful of similar ones that I hope to get out very soon.
And this all fits into the overall polyreprint roadmap, where I hope to make it a place for other designers who want to showcase 3D printing configurators. This will take some times. For now the focus is on making the creation of those configurators as easy as possible.
CAD nodes, rewritten
In Polygon v1, I had made a video about CAD nodes, but the licensing was actually not so simple for web configurators. So I’m now attempting to rewrite them from scratch. No libraries, just heavy math books (some are written in the 1980s, and the oldest is from 1979. Needless to say, they have stood the test of time), and of course a fair amount of AI. Turns out the logic behind CAD is complicated.
Those nodes are far from being ready for public consumption. They’re not even ready for private consumption! But at least I wanted you to know that this is the type of modeling tool I absolutely want to offer in Polygon.
Chess Twist is in Steam Next Fest
Chess Twist is taking part in Steam Next Fest, and it has a release date: November 10. In the meantime, the demo is available on Steam, and on the web. It is built with Polygon v2. When it’s out, you’ll be able to play against strong bots as well as Steam friends. If that’s your type of game, a wishlist helps a lot, and if you want to buy it, it will help fund Polygon. There will also be configurators on polyreprint.com to print your own boards. Or you may be able to do it from the game directly, I’m not sure yet.
As always, tell me what you build, and what is missing. Reply to this email, or say hello in the Discord, Bluesky or Twitter.
